Golden Shower Tree

Hello, everybody! I am Golden Shower Tree. My scientific name is Cassia Fistula. I have a very large trunk and my bark is uneven and rough. I am between 10 to 20 meters tall. I have very smooth leaves and my fruits look like sticks. I have large and drooping flower bunches that looks like golden grapes. You are all very welcome to be my friends!


The Yellow Flame Tree (Peltophorum Pterocarpum)

The Yellow Flame Tree is also commonly known as Copper Pod, Yellow Flamboyant or Yellow Poinciana. Its fruit is dark brown. It needs a lot of sunlight, but is highly drought and wind tolerant. Although it can grow in clay, it prefers sandy and draining alkaline soil. Its bark is used to produce yellow dye.

 

The African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata Beauv)
The African Tulip Tree has a straight tall trunk covered in light gray bark. It has a broad-domed crown. African Tulip Trees are native to tropical Africa. In Taiwan, they are mostly cultivated in the south, especially along the sides of highways. It has odd pinnately compound leaves. Each leaf consists of 4 to 9 pairs of opposite leaflets. It is planted extensively as an ornamental tree along the sidewalks and in the gardens. For instance, African tulip tree can be found in the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park, along the Zuoying Avenue and in many major parks. The fruits have a woody pod and can be used as cups.


Royal Palm (Roystonea Regia)
The Royal palm is native to Central America, Cuba, Jamaica and Panama. It's a large palm that reaches a maximum height of 18m. Its spheroid-shaped fruits range from dark red to an almost black purple. The Royal Palm was brought to Taiwan in 1901. Throughout the country it's being cultivated as an ornamental tree in urban parks or along streets. It has white flowers that bloom from October to May and produce nectar for the bees. The fruits are smaller than betel nuts and have round seeds that are about 1.2cm long. The trunk is stout and tapering, very smooth and grey-white in color.


Logwood (Haematoxylum Campechianum)

Logwood trees contain hematoxylin, which is a natural source of dye. It's excellent for dark color dye and is widely used on textiles and in cell biology. The bark and leaves are also used in various medical applications, such as anti-bacteria, anti-inflammatory, diarrhea, leucorrhea etc. It is not suitable to use as an anti-cancer drug. Be cautious when using logwood as drug.


Chinese Fan Palm

Hi! I am Chinese Fan Palm. My scientific name is Livistona Chinensis. I have fan-shaped, dark green leaves with spiky tips. Their stalks are about one to two meters long. My leaves are flat and smooth on the surface but underneath they are uneven and bulge out. I have small, bluish-black, olive-like fruits with one seed. My trunk can be used to make handles for fans and pillars for houses. The seeds are little poisonous. I flower twice a year. My first flowering period lasts from early March to early May and the second from mid-September to the end of October. During the second period I carry fewer flowers and often no fruits. I can grow high up in the mountains, but prefer well drained soil. I like it hot and humid with lost of sunshine. I'm very demanding!


Hong Kong Orchid Tree

Hello, I am Hong Kong Orchid Tree. I am a bit shy. My scientific name is Bauhinia Blakeana. I grow in Guangzhou City in China's Guangdong Province and in Hong Kong, but also in places like Madagascar. I prefer lowlands and a lot of sunshine. I don't mind cold weather or humidity. I'm very suited as ornamental tree in gardens or alongside roads. I have striking purple flowers with five petals. My crown looks like a fan. I flower in winter, from October till early March. Each of my flowers bloom for about a hundred days. I have a very strong vitality!
