The Former British Consular Residence at Dagou is the first Western-style building established in Taiwan. The red bricks used to construct the building were imported from Xiamen, Fujian Province of China. The Former British Consular Residence is located at the Sizihwan Bay and near the front entrance of the National Sun Yat-sen University in Gushan District of Kaohsiung City. The building was originally owned by a British trading company named MacPhail & Co. In May 1867, the British Consulate took over the building and used it as a consular residence. In 1987, the Taiwanese government announced the residence as a second grade historical site. In 2003, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs launched the repair work and operation to repurpose and reutilize this historical site, turning the site into a major cultural and scenic spot in Kaohsiung City. The Former British Consular Residence should be carefully taken care of and preserved. Visitors should always bear in mind not to drop litter or cause any damage to the building.
